How to clear your cache and cookies

Your web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc) stores data from sites that you visit so that it will remember you the next time you visit. This feature is great to help sites load quickly, but it can also cause some trouble. Many times, clearing your cache is a simple trick to make the application behave as it should and also improve your overall web browsing experience.

The application tends to work best with Firefox, which can be downloaded for free at GetFirefox.com. Internet Explorer, Chrome and Safari are also compatible.

Check out the instructions below on how to clear your cache. If you're not sure which browser version you're using, click on the Help menu in your browser’s toolbar, and select About [browser name].

Firefox for Windows

  1. From the Tools menu, select Clear Recent History.
  2. From the Time range to clear: drop-down menu, select the desired range; to clear your entire cache, select Everything.
  3. Click the down arrow next to "Details" to choose what history elements to clear (select check Cookies to clear cookies). Click Clear Now.

In some versions, the steps are:

  1. From the Tools menu in the upper right, click Delete Browsing History.
  2. Check Temporary Internet files, Cookies, and History, and then click Delete.

Firefox for Mac

  1. From the Tools menu, select Clear Recent History.
  2. From the Time range to clear: drop-down menu, select the desired range. Select “Everything” to clear your entire cache.
  3. Click the down arrow next to "Details" to choose what history elements to clear (select cookies). Click Clear Now.

Or, in some versions, the steps are:

  1. From the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data.
  2. Make sure Cache and Cookies are checked, and then click Clear Private Data Now.

Internet Explorer

  1. From the Tools menu in the upper right, select Delete Browsing History.
  2. Next to Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files. To delete your cookies, click Delete Cookies.
  3. Click Close, and then click OK to exit.

Chrome for Windows

  1. Click the Tools button in the upper right of the browser.
  2. Go to the Personal Stuff tab. Under Browsing data, click on Clear browsing data.
  3. Check Empty the cache and Delete cookies options. From the Clear data from this period menu, select the amount of data you want to delete.
  4. Click Clear Browsing Data.

Chrome for Mac

  1. Go to Chrome > Preferences.
  2. Go to the Under the Hood tab.
  3. Click Clear Browsing Data.
  4. Choose a timeframe, and check Clearing browsing history, Empty the cache and Delete cookies and other site plug-ins. Click Clear Browsing Data.

Safari

  1. From the Safari menu, click Empty Cache.
  2. When asked Are you sure you want to empty cache?, click Empty.
  3. Now, from the Safari menu, click Preferences.
  4. From the Security dialog box, click Bookmarks.
  5. Click Show Cookies.
  6. From the Cookie dialog box, click to choose a cookie and click Remove. To remove all cookies, click Remove All.
  7. Click Done.
