What is an internal subaccount?
Internal subaccounts are designed for sending informational emails to contacts with domains that you own (e.g., @students.university.edu or @company.com). Unlike a standard subaccount, campaigns sent from an internal subaccount do not contain unsubscribe or manage preferences links, ensuring that critical communications always reach their intended audience.
Internal sending requirements
In order to use an internal subaccount, there are certain restrictions that must be followed:
- Marketing use prohibited: Internal subaccounts may only be used for strictly internal, non-marketing communications.
 - DKIM domain matching: All contacts must match the DKIM-verified domain; subdomains are allowed.
 - No external contacts: Freemail addresses (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) or non-owned domains are not allowed and will be blocked.

How to create an internal subaccount
- If you are in the parent account, click on the Subaccounts section at the top of the page. If you are currently in a subaccount, click on the house icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select Subaccounts from the dropdown menu.
 - Click on the Create a new subaccount button on the right.
 - In the pop-up window that appears, give your subaccount a name and select Internal.
 - Click on Account features and check the box next to each option you’d like that subaccount to be able to use.
 - Click on the Save button.

How to set up an internal subaccount
Before you can begin sending, you need to finish setting up your new internal subaccount.
- Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select Account under Subaccount Settings.
 - Fill out all required information in the Basics and Sender info tabs.
 - Follow the steps in these instructions to set up DKIM.

Once DKIM is set up, then you can import your contacts. Only contacts with email addresses that match the DKIM-verified domain or subdomains will be accepted. All others will be rejected.

What should I do if a contact wants to opt out of receiving emails from this internal subaccount?
You can manually set the contact’s status to Opt-out or you can archive them. If you choose to archive them, there is a risk that they will be restored to the audience if they are included in an import or audience sync.
What if I’m sending internally, but some of my recipients have email addresses that don’t match my domain?
The internal subaccount type is not compatible with this situation. You will need to use a standard account type instead.
Will using an internal sending subaccount completely prevent contacts from opting out?
Sending from an internal subaccount removes all the unsubscribe opportunities that come from our system. However, some email providers may automatically insert their own unsubscribe links within in the inbox. As a result, it’s possible that a few contacts could still opt out.
* In April 2022, our legacy editor was replaced with a new drag and drop editor. Accounts that existed prior to this change still have access to the legacy editor through their previously saved templates and campaigns, however new, from-scratch campaigns can only be created in the new drag and drop editor. Accounts that were created after this change only have access to the new drag and drop editor. Please refer to our new editor FAQ article for more information.
