This article explains how to use the Image block to add, edit, and organize images in your campaigns.
How to add the Image block
- Navigate to your Campaigns tab.
- Open a saved drag and drop draft or click on the Create new campaign button to create a new campaign from scratch.
- Click on the Image block in the right panel and drag it to the desired location in your mailing.
- Click on the Browse button to open your image library.
In the library, you can select images that you’ve previously uploaded or choose to upload new images. For more information on how to use the image library, check out this article and navigate to the Using your asset libraries in the drag and drop editor heading.
How to remove image blocks
To remove an Image block from your campaign, simply click on that block to reveal the blue toolbar and then click on the trash can icon.
Image block overview
When working in the drag and drop editor, you can edit any of your campaign images directly from the Image block. To bring up the image editor, simply click on an image that’s already in your campaign and the Content properties panel will open on the right. The Content properties panel contains several tools to help you customize your Image block. The table below contains an overview of each tool and its function.
Setting | Function / how to use |
Auto width | This option is enabled automatically if the image size is bigger than the box. Use the toggle to turn auto width off and manually adjust the width of the image using the slider. Check the box to force the image to display at full width on mobile. |
Align | Controls whether the image is left, center, or right aligned. |
Change image | Opens the image library, where you can replace the image with a different one in your library, or upload a new image from your device. |
Apply effects | Opens the image editor. Click on the Apply effects button. |
URL | This field is for the source URL for the image. It will automatically populate, so you shouldn’t need to make any changes to it. |
Alternate text | Controls the alternate text of the image. Adding alternate text is a best practice since there are still email clients that have images turned off by default. |
Image link | Controls the link behind the image. You can link the image to a URL, to an email address, to a telephone number, or to a file that you previously uploaded through the document library. |
Padding | Controls the amount of space on all sides of the image. Use the plus and minus signs to adjust the padding to your liking or click on the More options toggle to adjust the padding for each side individually. |
Hide on | Click on the desktop icon to hide the block on desktop devices. Click on the smartphone icon to hide the block on mobile devices. |
How to use the image editor
Whenever you add or select an image in the drag and drop editor, you’ll see an Apply effects button in the panel on the right. To open the image editor, just click on that button. The image editor has a variety of tools that you can use to edit your image: Filter, Resize, Crop, Transform, Draw, Text, Shapes, Stickers, Frame, and Corners. Each time you use one of the image editing tools, you will need to either select Cancel or Save in order to exit and return to the campaign.
Filter
The filter tool allows you to apply different filters to your image in order to change its appearance. Click on a filter to add it to your image. Once you’ve found a filter that you like, click on the Apply button.
Resize
The resize tool allows you to adjust the size of your image. You can use the slider at the bottom of the screen to change the size or you can enter a specific width or height in the boxes at the top of the page. If you enter a width, the height will automatically adjust proportionately and vice versa, unless the Maintain aspect ratio box is unchecked. Once your image is the correct size, click on the Apply button.
Crop
The crop tool allows you to trim sections off of your image through a few different methods.
The image will be surrounded by a border with several dots on it. You can click on one of those dots and drag it to select your image area. If you’d like to maintain the aspect ratio, click and drag one of the corner dots. You can also enter a specific width and height in the boxes at the top left. This will change the image area to match those dimensions and remove any of the image that’s outside of those dimensions. Finally, if you’d like to crop your image to a specific image ratio, simply click on one of the image ratio options at the top right. Once you’re satisfied with your image, click on the Apply button.
Transform
The transform tool allows you to rotate and flip your image. To rotate your image by 90 degrees, click on one of the two buttons with the arrow icon. You can also use the slider on the right to rotate the image. To flip your image vertically or horizontally, click on one of the two buttons with triangle icons. Once you’re satisfied with your image, click on the Apply button.
Draw
The draw tool allows you to add markings to your image. Use the color wheel or swatches to choose your brush color, click on Brush type to select the pattern your brush will make, and choose your brush size from the available options. Once you’re satisfied with your image, click on the Apply button.
Text
The text tool allows you to add typed text to your image. Use the color wheel or swatches to choose your text color and use the Font dropdown menu to select your font. Once you’ve made your choices, click on the Add text button to create a text box.
After you’ve added your text box, use the corners to resize it, or the center dot to rotate it. You can also use the icons in the toolbar to mirror the text, add a shadow behind it, or open the Settings menu to adjust the shadow, color, outline, background fill, texture, gradient, opacity, and text style. Once you’re satisfied with your image, click on the Apply button.
Shapes
The shapes tool allows you to add different geometric shapes to your image. Choose your shape from the list of options and it will appear in the center of your image. Click and drag the shape to reposition it, use the corners to resize it, or use the center dot to rotate it. You can also use the icons in the toolbar to mirror the shape, add a shadow behind it, or open the Settings menu to adjust the shadow, color, outline, background fill, texture, gradient, and opacity. Once you’re satisfied with your image, click on the Apply button.
Stickers
The stickers tool allows you to add a variety of icons to your image. Click on a sticker category and then select a sticker from the list. Click and drag the sticker to reposition it, use the corners to resize it, or use the center dot to rotate it. You can also use the icons in the toolbar to mirror the sticker, add a shadow, or open the Settings menu to adjust the shadow, color, outline, background fill, texture, gradient, and opacity. Once you’re satisfied with your image, click on the Apply button.
Frame
The frame tool allows you to add a picture frame-style border around your image. Click on a frame option to add it to your image. Click on the gear icon in the selected frame to adjust the frame size. Click on the x icon in the selected frame to remove the frame. Once you’ve found a frame that you like, click on the Apply button.
Corners
The corners tool allows you to round the corners of your image. Use the slider at the top to adjust how rounded you want your corners to be.
The image editor does not have a way to crop a rectangular or square image into a circle, so using the corners tool and pushing the slider all the way to the right is the closest you can get to that. If you need your image to be a true circle or oval, we recommend editing the image outside of the editor and then uploading it. Once you’re satisfied with your image, click on the Apply button.
When using the corners tool, the “clipped off” portions of the corners will automatically be filled in with black. There’s no way to change this color or make it transparent. To circumvent this, we recommend saving your image as a PNG, since PNGs have transparent backgrounds.
How to undo changes made in the image editor
It’s important to note that when using any of the image editing tools, there is no undo or back button. Changes are automatically saved while using the image editor (and the drag and drop editor in general), but you can click on the Cancel button to undo any changes to the image and return to the drag and drop editor.
How to add image captions
In the new drag and drop editor, there’s no built-in caption tool for images. If you’d like to add a caption to an image, simply drag a new Paragraph block into your campaign and place it directly underneath that image. From there, you can adjust the text content and styles just like you would for any Paragraph block.
How to rearrange image blocks
One of the ways that the drag and drop editor differs from the legacy* editor is that there’s only one type of Image block. While this might seem odd, the drag and drop editor has a much more versatile system for creating the layout of a campaign, which actually made the other legacy image block types redundant.
In the drag and drop editor, each campaign is made up of rows; likewise, each row is made up of one or more columns. The number of columns in a row dictates the number of content blocks that you can place side-by-side in that row. There are no limits to the number of blocks that you can stack on top of each other in a row.
How to create a “combo” block
In the legacy* editor, a combo block was a single block that contained a section for text and a section for an image. The new editor doesn’t have a dedicated combo block, but you can create the same effect by following these steps:
- In your campaign draft, click on the Rows tab in the panel on the right.
- Choose one of the rows with two columns and drag it into your campaign.
- Click on the Content tab in the panel on the right and drag an Image block into one side of your new row.
- Return to the Content tab in the panel on the right and drag a Title, Paragraph, or List block into the other side of your new row.
- Add the desired image to the Image block and the desired text to the text block that you just dragged in.
Congratulations! You just made a combo block!
How to create a multi-image block
In the legacy* editor, there was a specific block type for creating blocks with multiple images in them. The new editor doesn’t have a dedicated multi-image block, but you can create the same effect by following these steps:
- In your campaign draft, click on the Rows tab in the panel on the right.
- Choose one of the rows and drag it into your campaign. Ideally, this row should have as many columns as you want side-by-side images.
- Click on the Content tab in the panel on the right and drag an Image block into one of the columns of your new row. Repeat this with the other columns of your new row until there is an empty Image block in each column.
- If you want to add captions, simply drag a Paragraph block underneath each Image block.
- To create a product image gallery, simply drag in as many Image blocks and Paragraph block as you need. For example, if you want a gallery of nine product images, all you need to do is stack three Image blocks and three Paragraph blocks in each column.
How to change the number of columns in a row
If you change your mind about the number of columns that you want in your row, there’s no need to delete the row and start over. Instead, you can add or remove columns from your existing row.
- Click on the row to open the Row properties panel on the right. Make sure you click away from any content blocks in the row, otherwise the Content properties panel will open instead.
- Scroll down until you find the Column structure section.
- To resize your existing columns, hover your cursor over the set of eight dots between each column. Click on the dots and drag your mouse from side to side to change the size of the columns.
- To add a new column, click Add new. You can resize the new column by following the instructions in step 3.
- To delete a column, click on the column that you’d like to delete. In the image above, if you wanted to delete the smaller column, you’d click on the box on the left. To delete the bigger column, you’d click on the box on the right. This will look a little different depending on how many columns you have and what size they are. Underneath this section, you’ll see a Delete button. Click that and the selected column will be removed.
* In April 2022, our legacy editor was replaced with a new drag and drop editor. Accounts that existed prior to this change still have access to the legacy editor through their previously saved templates and campaigns, however new, from-scratch campaigns can only be created in the new drag and drop editor. Accounts that were created after this change only have access to the new drag and drop editor. Please refer to our new editor FAQ article for more information.
